In the wake of the Christchurch attack in March 2019, companies are under more pressure to remove extremist content rapidly—but, problematically, defining "extremist" remains up to the executives of Silicon Valley corporations. Over the years, we've seen these companies fall prey to pressure from the US State Department and other governments, and remove vital human rights and activist content under the guise of "countering extremism." Now, with the rising tide of far-right extremist content online, these companies are increasing their use of automation, which will undoubtedly lead to more erroneous content removals.

Governments involved with the Christchurch Call and companies have failed to fully engage with civil society in the region. As someone with considerable contacts in this area, I want to bridge this gap and work with regional civil society to create a strategy for addressing this issue.
