In our post Cambridge Analytica world, the debate around personal data is vibrant but often complex and confusing for internet users. This session aims to provide a practical, informative and interactive approach to understanding the idea of "data ownership" and if we should sell our data to digital platforms such as Facebook and Google rather than give it away for free.

We will begin with an overview of how the advertising technology industry has flourished over the last decade, an explanation of how cookies work and how this has encouraged mass data collection from digital platforms. Then, through a series of videos, exercises and current policy examples, we will review the critiques of the data ownership debate and explore the alternatives from engineering, design and policy perspectives.

The session will end with some tips on how to have control over your data in your daily lives while we wait for regulation and policymakers to catch up with our technological reality.
