How do you differentiate between concepts like "mis-information", "dis-information" and "mal-information" in Arabic? Emerging technologies and digital specializations are constantly evolving and so is their language. In the sphere of “fake news” online, neologisms and the nuanced differences between concepts like "mis-information", "dis-information" and "mal-information" can be complicated to localize, making it a challenge to understand and explain how to identify and combat “online information disorder”.

In this workshop we will tackle the language of fake news - defining the related terms and concepts and collaboratively localizing them into Arabic. We will also introduce and demo the ADEF Arabic technical glossary (initiated at Bread & Net 2018) where attendees will input localized terms and definitions, helping to further develop an open, centralized and relational technical glossary. In addition, attendees will learn about the open source localization efforts - like Check, a collaborative information verification platform developed by Meedan - that use these localized technical terminologies in conjunction with collaborative online translation tools.
